Digest (or 'animal digest') is a palatability enhancer produced by chemically or enzymatically breaking down animal tissue — often of unspecified origin — into a liquid or powder. It is sprayed onto dry kibble to make it more appealing to dogs. The source material is typically low-grade and may include parts considered unfit for human consumption. Its use is a common indicator of a lower-quality recipe that relies on artificial flavour enhancement rather than quality ingredients.
