Sodium Hexametaphosphate

Poor Ingredient

Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) is a phosphate compound added to some dry dog foods as a dental additive. It works by binding to calcium in saliva, which can help reduce tartar build-up on teeth. While its inclusion is well-intentioned, some consumers are concerned about the use of synthetic additives in pet food, and there are questions about whether levels found in dry food are sufficient to produce a meaningful dental effect. Its safety at recommended use levels is generally accepted.
