D,L-Methionine

D,L-Methionine is a synthetic form of the essential amino acid methionine, which plays a key role in protein synthesis, detoxification and the metabolism of sulphur. In dog food it is primarily added as a urinary acidifier to help reduce the formation of struvite crystals, particularly in foods designed for urinary health. While it is an approved and functional additive, excessive amounts can be harmful, so careful formulation is required.
