Charcoal

Activated charcoal is sometimes included in dog food and treats, often as a colouring agent to produce dark or black coloured biscuits, or for its purported digestive benefits. Activated charcoal has a large surface area that can bind toxins and gases in the gut. However, when used at low levels in food it may also bind beneficial nutrients and medications. It is generally considered safe in small amounts but its benefits at typical inclusion levels in dog food are largely unproven.
