Taurine

Good Ingredient

Taurine is a sulphur-containing amino acid that is important for cardiovascular health, eye function, immune response and bile acid conjugation. Unlike cats, dogs can synthesise taurine from other amino acids, but research has raised concerns that certain grain-free diets high in legumes may impair this process, potentially contributing to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Including supplemental taurine in dog food — particularly in legume-heavy recipes — is considered a sensible precaution by many nutritionists.
