L-Carnitine

L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that plays a key role in transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they are burned for energy. It is added to some dog foods — particularly weight management and working dog formulas — to support fat metabolism and lean muscle maintenance. L-Carnitine is also required for normal heart muscle function and has been studied in relation to dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. It is considered safe and beneficial when included at appropriate levels.
