Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring compound found in cartilage and joint fluid. It is commonly added to dog food as a joint support supplement, particularly in foods marketed for older dogs or breeds prone to joint problems. It is thought to help maintain cartilage structure and reduce the degradation associated with osteoarthritis. Glucosamine is frequently combined with chondroitin or MSM for enhanced effect. The levels present in dog food are generally lower than those used therapeutically.
